What happens after you apply for a UTR number

The UTR number can take a while to come through the post so make sure you leave enough time to apply (we suggest, 2 months in advance) so you can meet the filing deadline of 31st January. HMRC recommend you give yourself at least 4 weeks to receive your UTR number.

What to do once your UTR number arrives in the post

If you are a subcontractor, take your new UTR number to your contractors, you will then be charged 20% tax, rather than the 30% emergency tax rate you will currently be paying. If you decide to use Rebate My Tax Ltd to perform your self assessment, we can ensure you get back any excess tax you have paid, ensuring you get back what is rightfully yours.
